For my husband Fabian and me one of the most fascinating aspects of Taiwan is its ancient primeval forests—the towering cypress trees that have stood for centuries, rooted deep in the island’s soil. In many ways, Taiwan’s rich heritage of folk songs feels to us like these forests: deeply rooted, endlessly branching out, and offering a timeless sense of continuity. That’s why we chose to name this album Ever Forest—a tribute to the enduring vitality and depth of Taiwan’s musical traditions.
2015 was a very special year for us: our Sony-album Taiwan Rhapsody (臺灣狂想曲) came to life. Included on the album released by Sony were the two cello concerto-like works "Taiwan Rhapsody No. 1–3" and "Six Taiwanese Songs", written for me by my husband, Swiss composer Fabian Müller. In both pieces, he wove Taiwanese folk songs together with his own music into a rhapsodic form for cello and symphonic orchestra, using this music to express his love for Taiwan, which over the years became like a second home to him.
It was a project very close to our hearts—a work that still resonates with us in many different ways. Its premiere in Taiwan, with the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra NTSO under the baton of Wen-Pin Chien, marked the beginning of a wonderful journey, bringing this music to renowned concert halls around the world—from the Berliner Philharmonie and the Tonhalle Zürich to the National Concert Hall in Taipei.
Yet what moves us most is the lasting impact that goes beyond the concerts: the many friendships, encounters, and stories that emerged through this album’s music. Over the years, the desire grew to continue these moments—to create a new album reflecting all these friendships and stories, and to give voice to our deep connection with Taiwan’s landscapes and people.
When Taiwan Rhapsody was released, many immediately noticed that I shared the same surname as the conductor Wen-Pin Chien: “Are you related?” they often asked. We are not—but we were indeed schoolmates, just a few years apart. Back then, we didn’t actually know each other personally. It was purely intuitive when Fabian and I considered who we most wanted to realize the album with. Wen-Pin’s spontaneous agreement thrilled us and led to a wonderful yet intense time in London—recording with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Our intuition was spot-on; we clicked right from the start, hardly needing words during our work. Our mutual affinity for this music bound us together immediately. It was likely the first time a major Western orchestra had ever recorded melodies from Taiwan.
This shared experience has connected us for many years. All the more reason for our excitement to continue this story with our new album, Ever Forest – Resonance of Taiwan.
Teng Yu-Hsien is indispensable to Taiwan’s musical history. With his unforgettable melodies, he created treasures that have inspired countless musicians far beyond Taiwan’s borders. It’s always fascinating to see how much depth and power lie within these seemingly simple tunes—almost like seeds containing a perfect plant, ready to bloom repeatedly in fertile soil.
They found just such “fertile soil” in my husband, Fabian Müller. A composer deeply rooted in Western music and connected to Taiwan for decades, he loves these melodies wholeheartedly. Melodies like "Flowers in a Rainy Night" and "Longing for the Spring Breeze" already appeared in his rhapsodies. On this album, ”Sorrowful Moonlight⽉夜愁” is also featured in rhapsodic form.
A memorable experience for us was the spectacular 2023 New Year’s concert with the OneSong Orchestra and its director Che-Yi Lee. I had the pleasure of performing ”Taiwan Rhapsody” in a packed National Concert Hall—and on that special occasion, Fabian was invited to contribute a new orchestral work. Che-Yi Lee is a visionary, and we admire his tireless passion for giving Taiwanese music a voice. United by their fascination and enthusiasm for world folk music, and knowing that Che-Yi is also a wonderful harpist, Fabian was inspired to include a dialogue between cello and harp toward the end of ”Melancholy Moonlit Night”.
Realizing this album has been a true joy and another expression of our friendship with the OneSong Orchestra. That is why we wanted to include two of Che-Yi Lee’s original works. His sensitive arrangement of the folk song "Flower of My Daughter" served as the encore at our New Year’s concert and captivated the audience. And his energetic composition "Flowing Clouds Over the Strings", composed for string orchestra and inspired by the rich tradition of Taiwanese opera, also comes to life on this album.
The music of “A Letter to A’ma“ is based on the Folk song “A Little Bird Chirping“ and Fabian’s score for the film “A Letter to A’ma“, a moving work by the taiwanese-French artist and director Hui-Ling Chen. She and we share a warm friendship. Not long after Taiwan Rhapsody was released, Hui-Ling reached out to my husband Fabian, deeply moved by his music, to request something in a similar style for her film A Letter to A’ma—and so began a wonderful, long-lasting collaboration.
”A Letter To Ama” is a magnificent and deeply moving film in which people recount their stories—or those of their ancestors—from vastly different perspectives, reflecting the impressive diversity of Taiwan. Created over many years, it became a precious cinematic document of the collective memory of Taiwan’s people, earning numerous international accolades. Fabian’s music garnered two awards for Best Film Score—a moment of profound joy and gratitude.
”A Little Bird Chirping” is based on two melody-variants. One version is widely known in Taiwan, while the other was sung to Hui-Ling as a child by her family. Fabian wove both melodies together, enriching them with his own thematic material. Toward the end, a second theme from the film, inspired by the indigenous Bunun tribe’s chants, emerges—radiant and full of hope, before gently fading into a contemplative, tranquil close.
We also share a special bond with Taiwan’s Paiwan tribe. Fabian and I have long been passionate about traditional music, especially from those countries with which we share a close relationship. Although we spend most of our time in Switzerland, Taiwan has long become Fabian’s second home. Early on, he began immersing himself in Taiwan’s musical heritage, finding particular inspiration in Paiwan songs.
In 2016, we had the great joy of inviting the “Taiwu Children’s Ancient Ballads Troupe” and their leader, Camake Valaule, to Switzerland for a music festival. It was a true cultural exchange: the children’s choir spent a whole week with Swiss children, learning each other’s songs. Previously, we had visited their school in Pingtung, Taiwan, where the children sang for us, and together with Camake, we were even able to attend a traditional wedding.
After the concerts in Switzerland, we traveled on to Austria and performed a joint concert, which included the song Uwanaiyui. All these cherished memories now come to life in this arrangement for cello and string orchestra. We also wish to honor a remarkable individual: Camake’s untimely passing was deeply saddening. His contribution to preserving these songs remains unforgettable and will live on in our memories and the music.
For over a decade, my husband and I fostered a musical exchange between Switzerland and Taiwan called Swiss Music Night. We invited outstanding Swiss musicians to Taiwan to perform with Taiwanese musicians. In 2017, we welcomed three distinguished Swiss cellists, who gave chamber concerts, held master classes in collaboration with the Tainan University of Arts Orchestra, and performed concertante works accompanied by the university orchestra. The final concert took place in the National Concert Hall in Taipei.
On this special occasion. Fabian arranged the traditional Hakka song “On the Way to the Mountain” as an encore. It was a gift to our friend Gerald Tseng, who supported our project. Gerald was also part of the aforementioned visit to Camake’s children’s choir in Pingtung and our attendance at the traditional wedding-he generously drove us in his car. An act of kindness we will never forget.
Three tea pieces occupy a special place on this album. In 2017, our friend and tea expert Menglin Chou - who runs an exquisite tea Shop in Zurich's old town, close to our home-approached Fabian to see if he could "translate" a few sophisticated teas into music. He gave it a try, resulting in the album Tea for Two Cellos, featuring ten "audible teas", arranged for two cellos so that my husband and I could perform them anytime. We've presented these tea pieces repeatedly in Taiwan and Switzerland, collaborating with Menglin for "tea concerts," where the teas are also tasted. For this album, Fabian was inspired to place three of these teas in a broader sonic context and re-scored them for cello and string orchestra. Chinese and Taiwanese musical influences can clearly be heard in these three tea pieces. Yet all the melodies are Fabian's own compositions and are not based on pre-existing tunes.
Many are likely familiar with the amusing legend surrounding Oriental Beauty. Queen Victoria of England is said to have given it its name. A young tea farmer, who had picked his garden despite a heavy insect infestation, sold his harvest to a well-known English tea trader.
Intrigued by this seemingly hopeless tea, the trader presented it to Queen Victoria. The Queen saw how beautifully the leaves danced in the water and named it “Oriental Beauty.” When the young farmer told his village of his luck, they didn’t believe him and called him a show-off. Dubbing the tea “show-off tea.” Hence, in Taiwan, it is still sometimes known by that name.
A stroll through Taiwan's primeval forest, lined with ancient cypresses, is accompanied by the deafening chirping of cicadas. Inspired by the amusing story of Oriental Beauty, Fabian decided to open the music with this chirping sound. After a brief introduction, a lively passage follows, as though the tea farmer were recounting his incredible story with grand gestures. An elegiac melody set against rhythmic pizzicati comes next, referencing the name “Oriental Beauty”-evoking an image of a dancing Asian beauty, just as Queen Victoria might have imagined in her mind’s eye.
The famous Zheng Dongding oolong tea from its namesake mountain inspired Fabian to compose a spirited dance exuding vitality, signaling both spring and the start of the tea harvest. This dance frames the entire piece. In the middle, an ancient-sounding, solemn call appears, reminiscent of what might echo through a mountain valley. Sung by Taiwan's indigenous people.
The music for Zengchong Muzha Tie Guanyin aims to capture the “charms of Guanyin.” The tea’s sweet, floral note is reflected in a lyrical melody imbued with a nostalgic flair, while brief dance-like interjections recall a bygone celebration. This composition seeks to convey the dignity, beauty, and grace of the goddess Guanyin in sound. Since Fabian has long engaged with Chinese culture. He has encountered Guanyin many times, developing a vision of her as a transcendent, radiant presence. Alongside the flowing main theme is a gently swaying melody inspired by Taiwanese music, supported by dance-like, steady intervals. Ultimately, the piece fades away in Guanyin’s venerable, peaceful aura.
I have shared many memories, stories, and wonderful friendships, yet “Sunset at Samsiu Garden” is connected to a very special, recent encounter. In 2024, a longstanding dream came true: I was able to launch the “Taiwan International Cello Festival” (TWICF).
At the age of seventeen, I traveled to Switzerland to study cello. Up to that point, my life revolved around school, practice, and competitions. I only realized much later how incredibly supportive my parents and my school had been. Back then, I knew little about my homeland. It was only after traveling with my husband that I discovered Taiwan's beauty through new eyes. Over time, the wish grew to give something back to my homeland, which had nurtured me so greatly and where my musical career had begun. With the inaugural “Taiwan International Cello Festival” held in October 2024, this wish finally became a reality.
Internationally acclaimed cellists met with esteemed Taiwanese musicians enchanting audiences with a wide variety of concerts-ranging from solo and chamber performances to a large cello ensemble. Yet the festival encompassed more than concerts in Taiwan's great halls. The master classes held at both venues were particularly important to me. As I am keenly aware of how formative such opportunities can be for young aspiring musicians.
Another exceptional festival concert took us to Yunlin, to the magnificent Samsiu Garden, one of the largest private gardens in Taiwan, reflecting its owners’ – Carol Lin and David Su –profound love for nature and creation. The open-air concert remains unforgettable. Accompanied by the “Academy of Taiwan Strings,” I premiered Fabian’s six Taiwanese songs in a new orchestral arrangement for cello and strings, specially prepared for this occasion.
We felt compelled to thank Carol and David for this wonderful collaboration, so Fabian wrote Sunset at Samsiu Garden—inspired by the folk song “Dusk at Hometown”, a family favorite. The timing could not have been more perfect: as the premiere began on that warm autumn evening. The golden evening sun slowly dipped beneath the horizon.
It is precisely these encounters with people, brought to life by music, that Fabian and I treasure most. "Ever Forest" is a deeply personal album, woven from memories of friendships, music, and shared stories. It reflects our profound connection to Taiwan—its people, its landscapes, and especially its musical heritage.
We hope that listening to this album, you not only hear the beauty of the melodies, but also feel the love, gratitude, and reverence that shaped every note. By reimagining these beloved tunes in fresh form, we aim to honor their roots while breathing new life into them—ensuring they continue to touch hearts and to inspire generations to come.
